Saturday's Action

Lots of shuffling in the seeding yesterday. Here's a quick rundown:
  • Purdue drops to a 3-seed with there loss at Northwestern, while the Wildcats will return the field as an 11-seed.
  • Ohio State picks up another big time win against Wisconsin. They move to the top of the 5-seed line. Wisconsin remains a 3-seed.
  • UNC drops to the bottom of the 7-seed line with their loss at home to Georgia Tech, despite a magnificent performance by Will Graves. Tech jumps up to the top of the 6-seed line.
  • Miami drops down a couple seed lines to a 10. UVA cracks the top 60 for the first time this season.
  • West Virginia falls to the bottome of the 3 line with their loss to 'Cuse at home. The Orange(men) remain at the bottom of the 1-seed line.
  • Pitt stays at the top of the 4 line. Louisville is a big win away from making the field, and they are certainly capable of beating a top Big East team; they seem to play everyone tough. Too bad they always start off so slow.
  • Notre Dame is hanging on to the field by a thread after their loss to Cincy. There only quality win is West Virginia, so they'll certainly need to pick up some more solid wins to make the final field.
  • Tennessee vaults up to the bottome of the 2 line with their win in OT at home against Mississippi. Ole Miss drops to a 5-seed.
  • UNLV is no longer the favorite to win the MWC after losing to Utah. They drop to the bottom of the 8 line below BYU. New Mexico is now the favorite to win the conference.
  • Dayton drops to the 7 line, while Xavier makes the field again as the third A-10 team. Temple is now the favorite to win the conference.
  • Missouri falls to the 10-seed line; Oklahoma makes the top 60.
  • Texas Tech gets knocked out the bracket with their embarassing loss to Kansas. They are not even in the Last Eight Out.
  • Wichita State's loss to Creighton will keep them out of the next bracket. Marquette is now the last team in.

Last Night's Happenin's

St. Mary's put up a tough fight in the second half, but fell short of a come back against fourteenth ranked (in the coaches' poll) Gonzaga. The Zags jumped out to a twelve point first half lead and was able to hold off a late surge by the Gaels in the second half. With the victory, the Bulldogs should remain a three seed in the next bracket. This is a pretty crushing blow to the Gaels at-large bid hopes. They may have to win out in conference play to have a chance. With a pair of games against the third best WCC team, Portland, and a game at Gonzaga, this could be a tall order. To have a chance, along with winning the rest of their WCC games, they must, at the very least, split with Portland and win at Gonzaga or maybe just sweep Portland and play the Zags tough in Spokane. That said, they will stay in the last eight out in the next bracket.

In the miserable Pac-10, Arizona State romped Oregon in Eugene, 76-57. This knocks the Ducks out of the top 60, while vaulting the Sun Devils up to the 60 spot. This makes them the second best Pac-10 team. AZ State still has a lot of work to do in conference play just to make the last eight out.

Cal picked up a solid road win at Washington State to go to 11-5 and 3-1 in conference play. They would probably be the front runner to win the conference tournament if it weren't for the inexplicable loss in overtime AT HOME(!) to UCLA (gross!), who has been just dreadful this season. Their other four losses: Syracuse (neutral), at New Mexico, at Kansas, and Ohio State aren't that bad, so they could very easily still make the field if they can get on a run in conference play. They have a showdown in Washington on Saturday; the winner of this game will make the next bracket as the favorite to win the conference.

Speaking of the Huskies, they beat up on Stanford last night to improve to just 2-3 in conference play. They remain the favorites to win the conference because they are ranked the highest (47) in the top 60, mainly because of their win at home against Texas A&M (#30), which is, sadly, the best non-conference win of any Pac-10 team (at least of teams that are eligible for postseason play; USC actually has a pretty solid OOC resume with wins against Tennessee and UNLV (neutral floor)).

There were no changes to the top 60 as a result of last night's games, except for Oregon falling out of the ranks and Arizona State jumping up to 60.

Analysis of the Field

First off, the field is definitely top-heavy, with almost all of the at-large bids coming from the six power conferences. Of the 34 at-large bids, just three (Temple, New Mexico, and BYU) are from mid-major conferences. (To put this in perspective, there were four in the tournament last year, which was the lowest ever.) This is usually the case in the early stages of conference play, before the teams in deeper conferences beat up on one another. That said, I don't see the Big East getting nine teams, nor do I see the ACC getting eight. The Big XII getting seven is a little dicey too, as far as I'm concerned.

As conference play continues, I predict that Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Baylor, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Marquette will all struggle to maintain their positions in the field. None of these teams have strong non-conference resumes and they all will finish around the middle of the pack of their respective conferences. This should open the door for mid-majors like St. Mary's, Wichita State, Richmond, Rhode Island, and Xavier to sneak into the tournament. St. Mary's will most definitely get into the field with a victory tonight against Gonzaga, and they should stay in the field barring disaster in the WCC.

In theory, there should be a fair amount of mid-majors snatching at-large bids this year because of how turrible [sic] the Pac-10 has been so far. As it stands now, they would most likely only get one bid, which is unheard of for a major conference. Thus, the usual five or so slots normally allotted for Pac-10 schools should go to mid-majors, based on the fact that a lot of middle-of-the-pack teams from the Big East, Big XII, and ACC (mentioned above) will likely fall onto the wrong side of the bubble as conference play progresses.

Post Numero Uno

This, my friends, is my first ever post on my first ever blog. I am a HUGE college basketball and Major League Baseball fan, and I would like to use this public forum to share my thoughts and opinions on both. I have followed such blogs as Bracketology 101, TheFightins, and March Madness All Season over the past couple of months; these have all inspired me to start my own such blog.

BEISketbol's first couple of months will largely be devoted to the ongoing college basketball season. I have kept an oft-updated (usually daily) top 60 rankings throughout the season. I plan on posting my rankings every couple of days, along with write-ups of the most exciting games from the night before and previews of upcoming games. In addition, I will post my field of 65, complete with seeds.

Last year, I compiled my predicted field for the NCAA Basketball Tournament before Selection Sunday. I correctly predicted 64 of 65 teams (G.D. Arizona!). I cannot recall how many I seeded correctly, but if memory serves correct, I was comparable to other college basketball blogs out on thems there interweb.

I also plan on analyzing some of the MLB Hot Stove action, along with providing some statistical insight into the season. I am a student of Sabermetrics, so I would like to use this blog as a way to improve my analyses skills, while adding personal opinion on burning issues.

Thanks for reading! I hope you'ins all visit this here blog again!
