Part 1 of My 5 Part MMJ Residency at T5 Video Extrav-O-Ganza: Ba-Ba-Bananas, Organic or Not, Srsly the Tastiest Week Anyone as Ever Really Had, Really

The Tennessee Fire Edition

I will begin with a preface. From October 18 to October 23, two-aught-ten, rock-n-roll outfit My Morning Jacket chronologically performed each of their five studio albums cover to cover commencing with The Tennessee Fire on the 18th and concluding with Evil Urges on the 23rd at Terminal 5 in the Biggest of Apples. While the albums were performed in the first set of each night, the second set was dedicated to b-sides, rarities and covers, which ranged from artists as diverse as Erykah Badu and George Michael to Danzig and Black Sabbath. It was an unbelievable experience, to say the least, to attend all of these shows. No matter how trite frontman Jim James may have sounded each time (he did it a lot) he mentioned how special and surreal the experience was for the band, you could tell he was incredibly sincere, and truly felt blessed that he could share the moment with 3000 of his closest friends each night. And that is exactly how I felt. Hopefully these videos give you as much joy as they give me as I re-live one of the best weeks of my life.

So, anyways, I mashed a bunch o' youtube clips together to create a concert film of the first night. There were two original tunes that had never been played before, "If All Else Fails" and "I Just Wanted to Say." In three previous shows, I had only seen two ("Evelyn" and "War Begun") of these songs performed live, so this night was extra special for me.

I wasn't able to find audio/video of all the songs. All songs marked with * are not featured in the video. Link below.

Dirty Projectors/Owen Pallett 9:30 Club 9/7/10

If you are a fan of experimental indie rock and live in the DC area there is a fine chance you were in attendance for the Dirty Projectors/Owen Pallett bill at the 9:30 Club Tuesday night. The Domino Records label mates were incredibly sharp in the opening night of their four show trek together on the east coast, but the performances were not without a couple minor flubs, which merely reassured the audience that the performers were indeed human.

The Canadian/loop man/violinist/keyboardist/birthday boy Owen Pallett, formerly known as Final Fantasy, layered all of his tunes mainly with just his violin and loop pedal. If you have never seen or heard of Pallett, think a more interesting, less poppy Andrew Bird. It was truly inspiring to watch Pallett add layer after layer to each song. It was as if he was spreading oil on a canvas, creating a new masterpiece in front of your eyes every four minutes or so. Every one of Pallet’s sounds came from his violin or his pipes with the exception of some sparingly, yet effectively used keys. He performed with more urgency than in his recordings; it was like the fate of the world rested on every word Owen spewed into his mic and sometimes into his violin (in order to texturally add haunting harmonies to the loop). A couple songs into the set, Pallett was joined by guitarist/percussionist/vocalist Thomas Gill. Gill supplied a little more colour to Pallet’s compositions, while adding heavy, driving drum beats with his kick drum and floor tom. Pallett’s magnificent set made me want to explore his catalog beyond his latest offering Heartland.

Led by chief songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Dave Longstreth, the Dirty Projectors, comprised of Amber Coffman (bass/guitar/vocals), Angel Deradoorian (keyboard/vocals), Haily Dekle (percussion/vocals), Brian Mcomber (drums), and Nat Baldwin (bass), emerged from backstage to a raucous sellout crowd. The Brooklyn-based sextet opened with the first track on their critically acclaimed 2009 effort, Bitte Orca, “Cannibal Resource.” After which, Longstreth remarked that they had just filmed a video for the single a few days prior. The Dirty P’s set list, which included all nine gems from the aforementioned Bitte Orca, spanned three albums and two ep’s, including the digital only release Mount Wittenburg Orca which features Bjork. Additionally, the Projectors busted out the high energy two-plus minute key-driven “Knotty Pine” from the Dark Was the Night compilation and closed their set with a beautiful rendition of Bob Dylan’s “As I Went Out One Morning.”

Longstreth’s sporadic twangy finger-picking upside-down-right-handed lead guitar dominated most songs, while the three lovely ladies provided some breathtaking rhythm and bluesy-ish harmonies. The tempo was slowed down close to midway through the first set for a gorgeous rendition of “Two Doves,” which featured just Longstreth on an acoustic guitar and Deradoorian on vocals, while the rest of the band vacated the stage. There seemed to be little variation from the studio versions of the tracks aside from some of Longstreth’s off the wall guitar fills.

Amber Coffman took over the lead vocals on the poppy Bitte Orca single “Stillness is the Move” only to have some trouble “coffing” (wamp, wamp) throughout the song. At one point, it appeared as if she motioned across the stage to Deradoorian to finish the song. This did not stop the rest of the band from jamming out while she regained her composure. Coffman eventually got through the song, sounding as good as ever. She later apologized to the more than sympathetic crowd for coughing into the mic.

All in all, this was easily one of, if not, the best show I’ve attended this year. The erratic drumming and guitar work coupled with the gorgeous harmonies of the three ladies with Longstreth, and the infectious bass lines from Baldwin make the Dirty Projectors one of the most fun and exciting acts playing today.

Last Night

Rarely is a Friday Night of college basketball during the regular season this interesting. Quick rundown:

-Pitt wins an incredible three-overtime thriller against bitter rival West Virginia at the "Oakland Zoo." Pitt jumps up to the middle of the 3 line, while the Mountaineers remain atop the 3 line. There's really no reason to knock them down below Ohio State after that game.

-Cornell drops a head-scratcher at Penn 79-64, who were just 3-15 entering the contest. They drop from the 11 line to the bottom of the 12 line behind Cal.

-Siena's 15-game win streak, which was the longest current win streak in the country, was snapped at Niagara, a team they pounded by 18 points at home earlier in the season. The Saints fall from the bottom of the 12 line to the 13 line behind projected WAC Champion Utah State.

Games to keep on eye on Saturday:

Tennessee at Kentucky, 9pm ESPN

Maryland at Duke, 1pm CBS

Northern Iowa at Bradley, 2pm

Cal moves up to a 12 seed with their blowout victory over Washington. They are now poised to snag an at-large bid if they don't slip up the rest of the way and lose in the conference tournament final (maybe even semifinal). Yay Pa(theti)c-10!!

Last Night

Illinois was the biggest winner of the night with their huge win at Wisconsin. They jump up two seed lines from the bottom of the 11 line to the top of the 9 line. They are officially off the bubble. The Illini still have a pretty brutal remaining schedule (home and home with OSU, @ Purdue, 'Sconsin), but they'll be in good shape as long as they win at least one of those games and beat Minnesota at home and Michigan on the road. That would put them at 12-6 in conference play, which would be more than enough to get in the field. Wisconsin remains on the 3 line.

Purdue leapfrogs K-State as the next 1-seed in waiting with their convincing victory at Sparty. The Boilermakers continue to be the favorite to win the Big Ten with the win. Michigan State drops to the bottom of the 3 line.

With the Wisconsin and Michigan State losses, Ohio State moves up from the top of the 4 line to the 3 line ahead of both Big Ten adversaries.

Vandy moves up two seed lines from a 6 to a 4 with their blowout victory over rival Tennessee in Nashville. The Vols fall to the top of the 5 line.

Wichita State's hopes of an at-large bid are no more with their inexplicable loss to Evansville. It was Evansville's first conference win this year.

Likewise, VCU's bubble officially popped on Tuesday with their overtime loss at George Mason.

Texas Tech sneaks into the final Last Eight Out spot with their win at Oklahoma.

Saturday's Action

Lots of shuffling in the seeding yesterday. Here's a quick rundown:
  • Purdue drops to a 3-seed with there loss at Northwestern, while the Wildcats will return the field as an 11-seed.
  • Ohio State picks up another big time win against Wisconsin. They move to the top of the 5-seed line. Wisconsin remains a 3-seed.
  • UNC drops to the bottom of the 7-seed line with their loss at home to Georgia Tech, despite a magnificent performance by Will Graves. Tech jumps up to the top of the 6-seed line.
  • Miami drops down a couple seed lines to a 10. UVA cracks the top 60 for the first time this season.
  • West Virginia falls to the bottome of the 3 line with their loss to 'Cuse at home. The Orange(men) remain at the bottom of the 1-seed line.
  • Pitt stays at the top of the 4 line. Louisville is a big win away from making the field, and they are certainly capable of beating a top Big East team; they seem to play everyone tough. Too bad they always start off so slow.
  • Notre Dame is hanging on to the field by a thread after their loss to Cincy. There only quality win is West Virginia, so they'll certainly need to pick up some more solid wins to make the final field.
  • Tennessee vaults up to the bottome of the 2 line with their win in OT at home against Mississippi. Ole Miss drops to a 5-seed.
  • UNLV is no longer the favorite to win the MWC after losing to Utah. They drop to the bottom of the 8 line below BYU. New Mexico is now the favorite to win the conference.
  • Dayton drops to the 7 line, while Xavier makes the field again as the third A-10 team. Temple is now the favorite to win the conference.
  • Missouri falls to the 10-seed line; Oklahoma makes the top 60.
  • Texas Tech gets knocked out the bracket with their embarassing loss to Kansas. They are not even in the Last Eight Out.
  • Wichita State's loss to Creighton will keep them out of the next bracket. Marquette is now the last team in.

Last Night's Happenin's

St. Mary's put up a tough fight in the second half, but fell short of a come back against fourteenth ranked (in the coaches' poll) Gonzaga. The Zags jumped out to a twelve point first half lead and was able to hold off a late surge by the Gaels in the second half. With the victory, the Bulldogs should remain a three seed in the next bracket. This is a pretty crushing blow to the Gaels at-large bid hopes. They may have to win out in conference play to have a chance. With a pair of games against the third best WCC team, Portland, and a game at Gonzaga, this could be a tall order. To have a chance, along with winning the rest of their WCC games, they must, at the very least, split with Portland and win at Gonzaga or maybe just sweep Portland and play the Zags tough in Spokane. That said, they will stay in the last eight out in the next bracket.

In the miserable Pac-10, Arizona State romped Oregon in Eugene, 76-57. This knocks the Ducks out of the top 60, while vaulting the Sun Devils up to the 60 spot. This makes them the second best Pac-10 team. AZ State still has a lot of work to do in conference play just to make the last eight out.

Cal picked up a solid road win at Washington State to go to 11-5 and 3-1 in conference play. They would probably be the front runner to win the conference tournament if it weren't for the inexplicable loss in overtime AT HOME(!) to UCLA (gross!), who has been just dreadful this season. Their other four losses: Syracuse (neutral), at New Mexico, at Kansas, and Ohio State aren't that bad, so they could very easily still make the field if they can get on a run in conference play. They have a showdown in Washington on Saturday; the winner of this game will make the next bracket as the favorite to win the conference.

Speaking of the Huskies, they beat up on Stanford last night to improve to just 2-3 in conference play. They remain the favorites to win the conference because they are ranked the highest (47) in the top 60, mainly because of their win at home against Texas A&M (#30), which is, sadly, the best non-conference win of any Pac-10 team (at least of teams that are eligible for postseason play; USC actually has a pretty solid OOC resume with wins against Tennessee and UNLV (neutral floor)).

There were no changes to the top 60 as a result of last night's games, except for Oregon falling out of the ranks and Arizona State jumping up to 60.

Analysis of the Field

First off, the field is definitely top-heavy, with almost all of the at-large bids coming from the six power conferences. Of the 34 at-large bids, just three (Temple, New Mexico, and BYU) are from mid-major conferences. (To put this in perspective, there were four in the tournament last year, which was the lowest ever.) This is usually the case in the early stages of conference play, before the teams in deeper conferences beat up on one another. That said, I don't see the Big East getting nine teams, nor do I see the ACC getting eight. The Big XII getting seven is a little dicey too, as far as I'm concerned.

As conference play continues, I predict that Cincinnati, Texas Tech, Baylor, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Marquette will all struggle to maintain their positions in the field. None of these teams have strong non-conference resumes and they all will finish around the middle of the pack of their respective conferences. This should open the door for mid-majors like St. Mary's, Wichita State, Richmond, Rhode Island, and Xavier to sneak into the tournament. St. Mary's will most definitely get into the field with a victory tonight against Gonzaga, and they should stay in the field barring disaster in the WCC.

In theory, there should be a fair amount of mid-majors snatching at-large bids this year because of how turrible [sic] the Pac-10 has been so far. As it stands now, they would most likely only get one bid, which is unheard of for a major conference. Thus, the usual five or so slots normally allotted for Pac-10 schools should go to mid-majors, based on the fact that a lot of middle-of-the-pack teams from the Big East, Big XII, and ACC (mentioned above) will likely fall onto the wrong side of the bubble as conference play progresses.

Post Numero Uno

This, my friends, is my first ever post on my first ever blog. I am a HUGE college basketball and Major League Baseball fan, and I would like to use this public forum to share my thoughts and opinions on both. I have followed such blogs as Bracketology 101, TheFightins, and March Madness All Season over the past couple of months; these have all inspired me to start my own such blog.

BEISketbol's first couple of months will largely be devoted to the ongoing college basketball season. I have kept an oft-updated (usually daily) top 60 rankings throughout the season. I plan on posting my rankings every couple of days, along with write-ups of the most exciting games from the night before and previews of upcoming games. In addition, I will post my field of 65, complete with seeds.

Last year, I compiled my predicted field for the NCAA Basketball Tournament before Selection Sunday. I correctly predicted 64 of 65 teams (G.D. Arizona!). I cannot recall how many I seeded correctly, but if memory serves correct, I was comparable to other college basketball blogs out on thems there interweb.

I also plan on analyzing some of the MLB Hot Stove action, along with providing some statistical insight into the season. I am a student of Sabermetrics, so I would like to use this blog as a way to improve my analyses skills, while adding personal opinion on burning issues.

Thanks for reading! I hope you'ins all visit this here blog again!
